Executed Prisoners, Brisbane 1883-1913

After the new prison and cellblock gallows were constructed at Boggo Road, Brisbane in 1883, that prison hosted almost every hanging in Queensland from that time on. The reason was simple economics and logistics - it was easier and cheaper to transfer a prisoner from regional Queensland to Brisbane than it was to send the sheriff and executioner to the regional towns.

Brisbane also had the best gallows in the colony, a permanent apparatus built into a cellblock that was less trouble to prepare than erecting and then dismantling timber gallows in the prison yards of Toowoomba and Rockhampton.

The prisoners sent to die in Brisbane reflected the colony's multiracial make-up. They came from Europe, Asia, North and South America, Australia, the South Pacific Islands, and were of varied religious backgrounds, including Catholic, Islam, Lutheran, Buddhist, Anglican, Salvation Army and 'Pagan' (mostly Aboriginal and Chinese prisoners).
