Prisoners are at the centre of the entire prison system. Without them, there would be no prisons. Even more than is the case with the officers, this group contains a wide range of personalities from all walks of life, including the 'there but for the grace of God go I' type, decent people who made one-off mistakes, others struggling through life, and the hardened criminals who society needs to be protected from.

It is invariably the more notorious kind who attract attention and headlines, but the vast majority of people who passed through Boggo Road did so quietly.
