The most important thing to remember about visiting Boggo Road Gaol is that it is a heritage-listed site, and visitors are expected to act in accordance with this fact. The entire site is historically and culturally important, and all those that visit should respect the delicate nature of the 100 years old buildings and exhibits. By respecting what you have come to see, future generations will also be able to enjoy Queensland’s oldest surviving prison.

Boggo Road Gaol is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 2pm, and at other times by making bookings with management. The site is located on Annerley Road at Dutton Park, about 3km from Brisbane City. There is adequate parking for both cars and coaches. Bus stops and the Park Road train station are all within 100 metres of the gaol entrance. Both trains and buses can be caught from Brisbane City to the gaol. Please check with transport information for availability of these services on (07) 131 230.

When booking for a guided tour you will need to provide the following information – the date and time you would like a guide to be made available for your group, the name of your school or group, a contact name and phone number for your tour group, and the number if visitors that will be attending. No credit card facilities are available. All payments must be by cheque, money order, or cash.

90 minutes should be allowed to complete a guided tour. A worksheet is available for schools by contacting us or by down loading a copy from this website.

There is no need to book for general admission, self-guided tours of the gaol. However, the gaol is only open for this type of visit, Monday to Friday, from 9am to 2pm.

Photography is permitted at the gaol. Certain parts of the museum collection are not to be photographed. These areas or exhibits will be clearly marked as such. This condition may be relaxed if a written request is provided to the management for consideration. No photos are to be sold or reproduced for commercial gain. Those that offend will be pursued through legal channels.

School bags, food, drinks and smoking, are under no circumstance, permitted inside the gaol buildings. The entire site is of historical importance, and is protected under government legislation. Any damage will be reported to the police.

Boggo Road Gaol welcomes wheelchair visitors. Access to the site is not a problem. However, the turn of the century design of the old prison means there are certain areas where wheelchair access is not possible. Please let us know if you are intending to visit the site and you believe you may have difficulty in moving about the gaol. Every effort is made to accommodate visitors to the gaol. Visitors are requested to avoid wearing high-heeled shoes for safety reasons.

Tour groups are welcome to have meals they have brought with them at the gaol. No food is available for sale at the gaol. Drinks can be purchased at the site. Souvenirs are also available for sale.
