Guided
tours are by far and away the most popular attraction that
Boggo Road Gaol offers. Ex-prison officers that have worked
extensively at the old prison conduct all guided tours. They
share an intimacy with the gaol and have an excellent
knowledge of its workings and history. Visitors are
encouraged to ask questions during the tour and become an
active participant in the experience. The guides are able to
recount many of their own and other officers’ experiences
of working at Boggo Road. A guided tour takes the visitor
through all the buildings on the site, including the visits
area, the one hundred year old cellblocks, and officer’s
mess hall. Once a tour is completed, visitors are free to
wander the site and make further discoveries. Tour guides
are able to tell stories about infamous inmates, including
John Andrew Stewart and James Finch convicted of the 1973
Whiskey Au Go-Go bombing, Ernest ‘Slim’
Halliday, the
only prisoner to successfully escape from his cell twice,
and Ernest Austin, who in 1913, was the last man to be hung
in Queensland.
These
tours are designed to be both informative and educational
for all those that visit. Tours last for approximately 90
minutes. Due to the century old construction of the gaol,
wheel chair access is not available to all buildings on the
site. Please advise management before your visit of
individuals within your group that may have difficulty
moving about the location, and every effort will be made to
accommodate them. It is also strongly recommended that
visitors to the gaol avoid wearing high-heeled shoes. Again,
the old design of the gaol requires guests to be careful,
and flat-soled shoes are far more practical. Tour times are
flexible, and can be made for during the day or at night.
However, ALL guided tours must be booked through management.
Provided the time requested is not already booked, a guide
will be made available for your group. Group tours will only
be conducted if adequate numbers of visitors are provided.
