Since opening in 1992, Boggo Road Gaol Museum has continued to expand and update the number of exhibits it has on public display. The collection is intended to be representative of Queensland’s correctional centres, both past and present, and as a result, the collection has items that have come from all over the state. The collection includes paintings, pottery, leatherwork, and various other works of art produced by prisoners. There is also a wide range of prison service memorabilia including badges, uniforms, hats, and other pieces of prison officer equipment and issue. Visitors will also see a large variety of illegal items that have been confiscated from prisoners including, weapons, tattoo guns, tools for escaping, and drug taking implements. The collection is a display showing the variety of items both legal and illegal, that is produced as a result of the need to detain those that break the law. Please contact us for further details or email John Banks.
By the end of 2001, the gaol management plan to have established a permanent inmate art display at Boggo Road. This will also be representative of correctional centres from right around the state of Queensland. It is hoped that an entire section of the gaol will be dedicated to a permanent display of Aboriginal inmate artwork. Some of Australia’s finest indigenous artists are presently serving time in Queensland’s prisons. In keeping with the theme of prisons and penology, the artwork displayed will only be items that have been produced by those that are inmates in Queensland prisons. This initiative will eventually develop into the largest collection of prisoner-produced artwork in the state. It is hoped that some of the artwork will be made available for sale to the public. While the management of Boggo Road will not become involved directly in the sale of items, those interested in making purchases may contact the
gaol management for further details.
