Artefacts

Donate your prison artefacts to the BRGHS

The BRGHS is interested in collecting any items relating to Boggo Road or other Queensland prisons. These include:

  • photographs
  • historical records
  • staff and prisoner clothing
  • furniture and fittings
  • prisoner art and craft work

If you have any of these items that you would like to see preserved for future generations, please contact us. We have members who are professional librarians, and others who have successfully studied cultural heritage and museology at university level. The BRGHS will document your donation and our historians will create a complete record of the item before storing it safely in a secure location.

We will not be displaying any artefacts while the gaol museum is closed, but we will be making the collection available for approved exhibitions at the museum in the future.

Volunteers

Volunteer with the BRGHS!

There are many reasons why people volunteer these days, and all those who volunteer want to do meaningful, interesting work in a flexible and relaxed environment. The BRGHS has an excellent record in providing such an environment, as our members will testify.

The range of creative and enjoyable volunteer work we can offer includes:

  • Historical research
  • Writing
  • Publishing
  • Community event stalls
  • Tour guides
  • Website design
  • Dressmaking
  • Collection management
  • Promotion and marketing
  • Fundraising

When the Boggo Road Gaol Museum reopens, there will be a large variety of other volunteer options at the site, including maintenance and customer service, so get a foot in the door and begin working with the BRGHS this year.

We are registered with both Centrelink and Volunteers Queensland, so feel free to speak to us about your volunteering requirements and how the BRGHS can help you.

Your Stories

We want your Boggo Road stories!

An important part of our work is recording the stories and memories of those people with a personal experience of Boggo Road. From our conversations with various people already, we understand how much it means to have your say on a place like Boggo Road .

Don’t wait until it is too late. By sharing your stories with the BRGHS, your memories, thoughts and opinions will be available to future generations, and your side of the story will always be remembered. We will safely store these records as one of the most important parts of our historical collection.

So, if you are:

  • an ex-officer or family,
  • an ex-prisoner or family,
  • a local resident,

you can either email or write your story to us, or we can arrange for a historian to sit down with you and record your stories. If you wish, confidentiality is guaranteed.
