Slim Halliday

What you see here are two 'mugshots' of the same man - Arthur 'Slim' Halliday, later nicknamed the 'Houdini of Boggo Road. The one on the right is from 1936, when the 26-year-old Halliday first entered Boggo Road after being found guilty of theft. The second was taken in 1962, when he was ten years into a life sentence for murder. By this time he was under permanant lock-and-key, confined in special cages in the prison yards and workshops because of his constant attempts to escape. The cocky look of the younger man was by now replaced with the resigned and bitter look of a 50-something man facing the rest of his life in Boggo Road (Halliday was actually released in 1976, and died a free man in 1982). The 1962 pic was saved from the trash by an officer when the prison closed in 1989.
