South Brisbane Cemetery NIGHT TOURS planned The Boggo Road Gaol Historical Society, in conjunction with the Friends of South Brisbane, are currently applying to conduct not-for-profit night tours in the cemetery. The tours will be conducted by FOSBC guides, who are the foremost historians on the subject. These not-for-profit tours promise to be the most entertaining, factually accurate, interactive and affordable cemetery night tour that you can have.   We are currently seeking expressions of interest from people who want to take a tour. If this is you, please email us and we will add you to our list. As soon as we receive approval to proceed from Brisbane City Council we will be in touch.

With the Boggo Road historical prison due to reopen in early 2011, a new group has been created to formulate a not-for-profit management plan for the site. The Boggo Road Gaol Public Access Group is a coalition of over 20 industry professionals, academics, community and education sector representatives, and some of Queensland's leading professional historians.  

Several meetings have been held this year, and the group continues to grow. As the name suggests, the aim is to maximise community involvement, benefits, and access to the site. Our aim is to move beyond the traditional concept of a ‘museum’ and incorporate a wide range of visual arts, music and theatre performance into the interpretive space, creating an innovative, dynamic and cutting-edge programme that explores the significance of the prison to those who experienced it.

 

Members of BRGPAG will be engaged in discussions and planning during 2009/10 in preparation for the expected Expressions of Interest stage. During this time we aim to formulate a sustainable business plan for Boggo Road, and also develop a range of interpretive programmes that fully realise the potential of the site to become one of the premier heritage attractions in Queensland.

 

The Boggo Road Gaol Public Access Group is an initiative of the BRGHS. Chris Dawson, the secretary of the BRGHS, says, "It has been very exciting to see these people come together and the ideas flow. The level of expertise and experience is huge, and the final plan should go way beyond anything that happened at the prison museum site before."

 

Although many details are still under wraps, a media release will be circulated soon.

. History Queensland Biennial Fair 2010 .   The BRGHS had a stall at History Queensland’s History Fair on Sunday 23 May. History Queensland is a statewide federation of about 60 local and family history organisations. This was our third appearance at their fairs, and the first one in Cleveland. There was a decent turnout on the day, and we managed to distribute a lot of flyers, drum up interest in our proposed tours, and sell a lot of books.   As always with these events, it was particulalry good to catch up with friends and contacts from other history groups.   The venue was excellent, and well done to History Queensland for organising this.
